Unstable Oscillators

Your melody sets my teenage heart aflutter
turns my knees to brie or maybe
more like melting butter
They say words are free
but I’ve never been much of a talker
so hum it with me through the vents
in our freshman lockers

Hum...

You and me are a couple of unstable oscillators
We were meant to be
unlike Farah Fawcett and Lee Majors
They say words are free
but I’ve never been much of a talker
so hum it with me on the porch
in our rest home rockers

Hum...

Sang The Hangman

Hang in there sang the hangman, the worst is almost over
Hang in there sang the hangman, soon you’ll sleep beneath the clover

Soon… you’ll sleep… so… sound
Soon… you’ll sleep… deep… underground

Soon you won’t care which man your sweet lover lies with
Soon you will be freed from bloodshot eyes to cry with
Soon you’ll leave behind these heaving lungs to sigh with
No more troubling dreams that you have wings to fly with

Soon… you’ll sleep… so… sound
Soon… you’ll sleep… six feet… underground

Hang in there sang the hangman, the worst is almost over
Hang in there sang the hangman, soon you’ll sleep beneath the clover

Soon… your knots… will come… unwound
Where… you go… no one… is bound
Soon… you’ll sleep… so… sound
Soon… you’ll sleep… six feet… underground

Hang in there sang the hangman…

Roofless Kitchen

A sink full of broken dishes
in a roofless kitchen
ravaged by the wind and rain
wells webbed with a spreading stain

I tried to hide all your pictures
in my deepest fissures
but I see your face when I close my eyes
and in the cracked window
a face I despise

If I could turn regrets into wishes
like multiplying loaves and fishes
I’d patch those cracks in our ceiling
before the roof caved in

A sink full of broken dishes
in a roofless kitchen
ravaged by the wind and rain
wells webbed with a spreading stain...

So Hard

Have you ever loved so hard
you were scared… that your fucking heart would pop?
Have you ever cried so hard
you were scared… that you’d never ever ever stop?

It’s so hard
to lose the love that held you for so long
It’s so hard to see the face of the man who replaced you
It’s so hard

Have you ever tried so hard
not to care… but your fuckin heart won’t stop?
Have you ever tried so hard
to repair… but your fuckin heart’s been chopped?

It’s so hard
to lose the love that held you for so long
It’s so hard to see the face of the man who replaced you
It’s so hard

Verse 1

Answering Machine

My messages sleep on her answering machine
and the voice that’s awake inside of me
wants to take back those words before they repeat
words are despair, words are defeat

I’d like to erase each word I’ve said
cut out the tongue inside my head
send the operator a fax
asking for all my quarters back

By now she’s asleep by her answering machine
by now she’s somewhere inside a dream
by now he’s asleep where I used to sleep
and I’ve got only my voice to keep me company

Cross On The Hill

There’s a cross on the hill out on Route 84
to remind sinners dying is what life is for
crucified every day your arms get pretty sore
but that’s the price that you pay being born in this world

Each mile I drive out on Route 84
leaves gravel inside like a kind of reward
each inch of the road takes me further from hope
more space in my bed, exhaust fumes in my soul

If there’s someone above who hears people pray
I’ve got one thing to ask ‘fore you close shop today
Give back the one reason you took away
without her this damn road’s a drive to the grave

Well there’s a cross on the hill out on Route 84
to remind sinners dying is what life is for
crucified every day your arms get pretty sore
but that’s the price that you pay being born in this world

Corona Summer Song

When I found out I’d lost my job
it wasn’t really worth a sob
‘cause I had you & we had plans
& nothing’s holding them for ransom

You moved out on March fifteen
left me & the cat in quarantine
Scaling back my summer plans
Covid’s holding them for ransom

Got crushed again on August two
when I found out about you know who
Cancelled all my summer plans
Corona won’t accept my ransom

Ugly crying in my kayak
Hugging the cat way too often
Why make any autumn plans?
Corona won’t accept my ransom

Side of Your Mind

When you left felt like I’d lost my home
‘cause now it’s just a house I live in all alone

and I… still can’t bring myself to sit in your chair
or take your picture from the top of the stairs
so don’t lose me in the back or your mind
there are way too many cobwebs there

Chorus: So can you keep me on the side of your mind
somewhere where you might sometimes rewind?
Please keep me on the side of your mind
if you get lost then you can find me there

Days I don’t know, what days are for
Ever since you left, nothing makes sense anymore

Chorus

How can I sleep, without you in our bed?
How can I think, when your ghost haunts my head?
How do I grieve you, when you’re not dead?

Chorus

And if you should ever un-decide
Consider giving me just one more try
I hope you know where you can find me
I’ll be waiting on the side of your mind…
Don’t leave me waiting on the side of your mind
